Moodle 1

I enjoyed the assignments this week, I liked that we had quizzes, even though I struggled with them, I liked the challenge. Thus far in online classes I have loved writing blogs and commenting on others and really seeing people in their own train of thought on a certain subject and or theory.

Some concepts that stuck out to me in this lesson were from chapter 3, Identity and Technology as well as Ethnic Identity: outcomes and processes. This caught my eye due to the fact that I work at a school with a lot of EL students, probably 85% of our students are bilingual speaking and some barely English. I work in Chicago Ridge where there is a large demographic of Palestinian and Yemen ethic groups. Now because there are so many EL students at our school i feel like this concept doesnt hold that much "identity" seeking as it did when there were only a few EL students there at first. I wonder what those students went through, and how different they felt or how much they tried to be "American."

"Children may begin with an unexamined ehtnic identity, either because they have not explored identity at all (diffusion) or because they have accepted the identity encouraged by others (foreclosure). Many European American adolescents could fit the unexamined category. A period of ethnic identity exploration (moratorium) might be followed by the resolution of the conflict (identity achieved.)"- (pg 99)

Touching back on Technology and Identity. A quote that stuck out to me was "Some people even talk about their "life mix" a mash up of what they live online and what they live in real life. For some adolescents the boundaries may be unclear and easily crossed." (pg 98) This is where I feel like without proper guidance from parents is where this fine line can be blurred. What do you think?

  1. I find that "life mix" idea very interesting. As an adult who grew up with minimal technology, it is incredible to think of how blended these worlds can become. I just watched a documentary about Slender Man where two 12 year old girls stabbed their friend as a sacrifice to Slender Man. Admittedly, one of the girls who did the stabbing was schizophrenic, both of these girls truly believed that this story of Slender Man that they read about online was real. They thought if they didn't kill this someone, that Slender Man would then kill them and their families instead of accepting them as one of his followers. Most adults can look at these videos online that showed "evidence" of Slender Man as obviously being fake but it was just fuel to the fire for these girls. The lines were blurred. The one dad of one of the girls expressed how vigilant he was about keeping screen time to a minimum and they had an open door policy in their house, but she still found a way around that. It's scary to think that there is not definitive way to help keep our kids safe from the darker side of the internet, and keep a clear cut line between reality and fantasy.
