What do you think causes teachers to lose interest in teaching or to come in with a bad attitude. I always did wonder about those teachers and how they were earlier in their career. Do you think they might've been like this ever since they began or was there an instance that changed them for the worse. I don't think how hard the job can be that someone will come in with a negative attitude or make it seem like they don't care but I know there teachers who do act like this. I would like to see others opinions if there was a teacher who almost caused you to look into other fields?
I did like the assignments this week as they weren't questions that were uncomfortable answering and also made us look back into what got us interested in the field. Seeing how my old teacher not only inspired me to become a teacher but he also opened up my eyes to get into coaching. The reason I really wanted to get into coaching was to help kids become football players and also give back to a sport that I'm afraid will become non existent in our lifetime. If we teach our youth how to take care of their bodies and to properly learn to tackle we can prevent many of our current issues. The current issues we have now is protecting our brain but what many didn't realize is that most of the athletes that are found with CTE is because of the lack of knowledge we had going back to even 10 years ago. Many people didn't know that Vince Lombardi treated his players with head injuries as cowards and forced them to collide with every player on the team to build their toughness. Being a coach now I would never think of doing this due to morals and the health of others and I know if we teach them to play the game right, we'll continue to make strides to make the game safer and last forever.
Hi Dan,
ReplyDeleteIn response to your first point, I imagine there are many reasons why teachers end up with bad attitudes, but I've always wondered why disgruntled teachers stay in the profession if they're so unhappy??
I do know several teachers who have gotten very discouraged about their job very fast because of lack of support from administrators. Support (or lack thereof) from the top can make or break a teacher's experience. For example, when a principal demands certain test scores or expects students to meet a particular performance level but doesn't help teachers by providing resources or won't run interferce with difficult parents or expects a bunch of mindless paperwork to be completed, it can be very discouraging. One teacher-friend of mine always says, "I wish my principal would just let me teach!" because she has so many other tasks to complete that she can't focus on her students...

Dan I really enjoyed your discussion of not only what made you want to coach, but why you think it is an important job to do. I feel the same as you in the sense that coaching is an amazing way to give back to the community, and I like you, took advantage of sports throughout my lifetime and I wish to provide those opportunities for future generations to benefit from. I also think it is incredibly important for you as a football coach to educate on proper technique because like you said TBIs and CTE are a very real threat in the sports realm and especially in football. I too am looking forward to further research into CTE and better safety practice to not only protect football players, but I am hoping that research will discover concepts that can benefit all contact sports and in turn keep our athletes safer than ever before.
